Artist’s Project

Sylvie Froux

Micha Laury’s art project clings irresistibly to his own life. It is this ceaseless struggle between a subject and a society that he has been trying to demonstrate for the past 35 years and the fact that the whole of his oeuvre is encompassed in this latest piece is intended to attest further to the movement of life.
It is the refusal of the aura of the work, the refusal of the single and ongoing discourse that prompts him to surround his works, or at least the titles of some of them, with an aura of fire, a vague and haphazard aura, subject to the gust, if there is one. The project to transform language, in any event, and capsize it, also links it in a way to a tradition, the tradition of the alchemists… and we’ve never been quite sure whether they were poets or not…
Made in the privacy of the studio like a huge performance lasting through much of 2001, this visit to the whole of his work as here authorized by the artist is certainly not a pause, or even a report: there is no accumulation of values or memory. What is much more involved is the pursuit of something which he embarked upon many moons ago: a challenge issued to the subject in art, its real presence over time and its reinclusion in the history of a work. He is trying to say: the work isn’t one, it doesn’t have just one meaning, it can be reexpressed, it can be changed… it takes time to do so, it isn’t fixed, any more than the subject itself.
From all the traces of the experiences revealed throughout his oeuvre, he still wants to outline a motif: each burning title engraves the sheet of metal on which the operation takes place and symbolizes this renewal, a new history mingling all the old threads together.
Hitherto, his drawings had yielded this share of the secret of the work. The 32 hours of video which were shot of the performance Burning Titles Selected Index 1967-2001 literally attest to the bedazzlement of thought, the impossibility of grasping it, its possible and sudden disappearance and the effort to hold on to its effectiveness. Thirty two hours which recount the extreme concentration and the invariably ill-defined time that stretches about an artist.
Micha Laury clings to this revelation as he does to the titles of his works which simply describe what they are. Writings, drawings and videos absorb, without mystery, the artist’s « act ‘ leaving the onlooker’s eye free to observe. There is still the repetition and ritual of this kind of personal apocalypse and the work unfurls like a philosophy of life and resistance. When the subject is still there, and namely that there is not just one truth, and thought can continue to exist and spring forth from human beings; they are still ready to reenact their destiny, reanimate it and not spend centuries without seeing themselves at work… So they will be able to survive.

Projet d’artiste

Sylvie Froux

Ils pourront donc survivre.
